This section provides information about Canadian research centres, its activities, services, networks, scientific results, potential applications for development, and contact information. A small number of universities and institutions have been considered, including the University of British Columbia University, the University of Calgary, York University, Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, and McGill University. Additional research institutions will be added gradually.

  • Mapping the Media in the Americas
    A joint project of the University of Calgary's Latin American Research Centre, the Carter Center, and FOCAL will seek to engage media professionals - owners, editors, columnists and journalists - in efforts to improve campaign and party finance practices.

  • RedLEIDH Human Rights Education Network is a CIDA funded project which brings together York University's Centre for Research on Latin America & the Caribbean (CERLAC) and the Osgoode Hall Law School in a new network of Latin American universities and civil society organizations to promote human rights education, applied research and capacity-building in the region.

Centre for Developing-Area Studies (CDAS)

The Centre for Developing-Area Studies (CDAS) is an interdisciplinary research centre and part of the Faculty of Arts, McGill University. While CDAS members, including graduate students, faculty members and postdoctoral fellows, conduct research on international development in all regions of the so-called developing world, Latin America has always been a central focus. This research is intended to contribute directly to understanding the foundations of democratic governance. This larger question, in turn, is approached in terms of three distinct axes or research clusters: 1) Economic Development, 2) States and State-Building, and 3) Social Pluralism and Civil Society. In addition to our teaching and research activities, CDAS is committed to building bridges between academia, policymakers, and business and community leaders. Centro Latinoamericano de Economía Humana (CLAEH)

Founded in 1957, CLAEH was officially recognized as a University Institute in October 1997. CLAEH's education is oriented to post graduate studies (diploma and masters degree) in social sciences and focuses in the least attended regions of Latin America or those who are in need of highly qualified human resources. Training is offered and integrated with national and international university systems. This allows CLAEH to maintain agreements with local and foreign universities and institutions.

CLAEH's courses in 2007 include, among others: Diploma in Local Management of Development, Masters Degree in Social Policies, Specialization and Masters Degree in Integration and MERCOSUR, Masters Degree in Child and Teenage Policies for Prevention of Drug Addiction, Diploma in Health Economics, Specialization and Masters Degree in Health Policies and Management, International Course of Health Promotion, Diploma in Digital Documentation, Post graduation in Sociology of Communication, Masters Degree in Educational Technology, Masters Degree in Education Policies and Management, Masters Degree in Education and Work.

The Centre for Human Settlements (CHS) at the University of British Columbia

The Centre for Human Settlements (CHS) at the University of British Columbia develops research programs and provides multidisciplinary training in urban, regional and communal development. CHS is a unit within the School of Community and Regional Planning. Professors and students from many departments participate in CHS projects CHS is qualified as "Centre of Excellence" in planning of human settlements by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA-ACDI).

The Centre's partners conduct policy related research on research topics including gender equity, sustainable and healthy communities, urban-rural relations, metropolitan governance, disaster management, risk analysis and community planning. Its biggest projects focus on capacity building in Vietnam, China, Brazil and Sri Lanka.

This Portal is open to requests from Canadian research institutions willing to make special announcements about their newsletters, publications, job openings, consultancy demands, interest for exchanges, development of training activities, and requests for obtaining support for exploratory visits to the Latin American region.

Requests will also be included in the Portal's newsletter.

Upon request from research centres, additional topic areas focusing on particular development problems may be included in the Portal.
